Landscape Narrative |
Recovering clearcut, surrounded by good quality frost pocket spruce forest and spruce swamp. Adjacent Coberly property is high quality with cave, twinflower, snowberry, goldthread, bunchberry, and other rare plants in spruce forest.;Spruce - fir forest with natural openings that were clearcut 1980-1982. Dave Saville, who was there at the time notes that the deep organic soils dried and cracked in the sun, but the area never burned. Now there is vigorous young spruce regeneration amid the large stumps. A few native balsams that pre-date the cut remain. Many young balsams were planted by Dave Saville. The fetterbush probably pre-date the cut also, there are only 3 shrub-clumps of fetterbush totaling 7 sq.m. The community is a marginal wetland, probably getting wetter each year as the forest grows up again.
|
Representativeness |
The only occurrence (to my knowledge) of Pieris floribunda as an understory shrub in a (marginal) wetland. Usual habitat of this shrub is rocky ridgetops.
